‘I CAN FINALLY BE WHO I’VE ALWAYS BEEN’

DOCUMENTARY FILM | BBC NEWS | DIRECTOR and EDITOR | 2022

For one full year, teenager Andi Bernabe granted the BBC access to the most formative moments of his life. From coming out as trans to starting college in a pandemic, Andi navigates the highs and lows of becoming who he's always been.

Director’s Note: I got the idea for this film when I watched a viral TikTok of Andi in February 2020. In the video, Andi’s friends surprise him with an envelope full of enough cash to legally change his name on his 18th birthday. It was a wonderful and rare media moment focusing on trans joy. When the pandemic hit, my co-director and I decided to use our inability to film in person as a creative opportunity to make something completely outside the box in collaboration with Andi. The result is this experimental, 30-minute TV documentary, filmed entirely remotely on a cell phone. It aired twenty-six times on the BBC News Channel and streamed for months on iPlayer in the UK. I edited a 23-minute digital documentary for BBC Reel, a 10-minute digital short for the BBC News website, and a 7-minute mobile-first version for the BBC’s exclusive Facebook Watch show, Cut Through the Noise. After the film aired, we had Andi as a guest on BBC World Service’s Newshour program to weigh in on the political debate over gender-affirming care bans and anti-trans legislation in the US. The digital version of the documentary has won several awards. It was shortlisted for the 2021 BBC News Awards for ‘Most Innovative Use of Production Craft’ and won the NLGA: Association of LGBTQ Journalists’ 2022 ‘Excellence in Digital Video’ award. It also won 3rd place in the Documentary category of the 2022 White House News Photographers ‘Eyes of History’ contest. Beyond awards, it has been used as an educational tool and discussion starter in community settings across the country. A high school in San Rafael, California has even incorporated the film into its gender studies curriculum.
